Sorry if this is a little confusing…
A family member who lived at my permanent address called up the company who I had my retirement fund with and withdrew about 14,000 dollars. They just needed to tell them my social security number and the checks were mailed to them. I was in college at the time and had no clue this was going on. I called the company, and they said that these things happen sometimes, and they have no Fraud Department. I called the police and they said I should go after the Investment company, because they didn’t do a thorough job ensuring the identity of the person withdrawing the money, and it’s not my problem that they allowed it to happen.
Any suggestions?
It was a Roth IRA retirement fund. I don’t want to put the name of the Company on here.
What kind of lawyer?
I would certainly get an attorney, but the fact remains that your family member had access to ALL of your information. Consult an attorney.
I would be more pissed off at the family member who ripped me off.
If you go after the retirement fund, you may find that they go after the family member criminally, or insist that you do. If they ask if you did, and you failed to file a complaint with law enforcement, they could in essence say that you condoned the act.
Get a lawyer.

I wish you would say what sort of retirement account it was. There is a state or federal regulator that controls the company. With the info above it is impossible to tell you what that agency is.
Call a lawyer.

Get an attorney and sue the company. They have to take at least ordinary precautions ("ordinary" is a legal term here) and they took none at all. They breached their fiduciary responsibility to you and are almost certainly liable for your loss – including your attorney’s fee.

You really need to get a lawyer now!

Yup, get a lawyer, sue, this will be a nice case to win. The lawyer will tell you whether you should sue the company, your family member, or both.
